The wealth whiz

- By April Paulyn B. Roque

AMONG THE people in Philam Asset Management, Inc. ( PAMI) who help the company maintain its strong position in the wealth management industry is Sheila S. Limon, the company’s high net worth channel manager, who currently manages close to a billion pesos’ worth of assets and leads a team of relationship managers responsible for handling high- net- worth individuals, as well as corporate and institutional accounts.

“My work is focused on advising clients regarding goals-based investing, and [working] with institutions, such as schools and corporations, on portfolio management,” Ms. Limon said. “I design suitable portfolios to help clients meet individual financial needs, bring together a range of services and products for their convenience and couple it with valuable and sound fi nancial advice.”

Ms. Limon is a Mass Communications graduate who found a career in the financial services sector when, for her first job, she was hired by a commercial bank as a frontliner. She rose through the ranks and became the branch head after several years, and eventually became the area head of the bank.

She had 18 solid years of banking expertise when she shifted to the asset management industry, and with the help of PAMI, she was able to become one of the top-performing advisers in the field.

“PAMI regularly sends us to regular training programs in financial planning and wealth management. They send us to attend different economic summits and conferences to be more active and involved in the asset management industry,” she shared.

One of the greatest challenges in her current line of work, she said, is educating clients regarding investing and “staying the course.”

“Whenever there’s noise in the market, this makes clients jittery and prone to irrational decisions and sentiments,” she explained. “As fi nancial advisers, we are here to be the rational voice of the client.”

But she emphasized how rewarding her work really is, particularly in terms of helping clients and their families achieve their fi nancial goals. She believes fi nancial advisers should generally be driven, motivated, passionate, and persistent, but having a heart set on helping people is the most significant aspect of the job.

“I am about helping people, and I am lucky to be a part of an industry that has a significant impact in changing the lives of our fellow Filipinos. The skills required can be learned and will just follow. As long as you have the heart to help people, then you can never go wrong in this industry,” she said.

Ms. Limon is a chartered wealth manager certified by the American Academy of Financial Management, a certified registered fi nancial planner by the Registered Financial Planners Philippines, and a licensed certified investment solicitor by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

She also f inished a one- year course in Trust Operations and Investment Management in the Asian Institute of Management under the Trust Institute Foundation of the Philippines, and is currently taking her MBA degree at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business under the Regis Program.

“I am lucky to be a part of an industry that has a significant impact in changing the lives of our fellow Filipinos.”
