UP leads international confab on sport pedagogy

- Angelo S. Murillo Michael

IN line with its standing and tasks as the country’s leading institution in sports science and as state university, the University of the Philippines’ College of Human Kinetics (UP-CHK) is spearheading the holding in the country of the first- ever international conference on sport pedagogy, health and wellness this weekend.

A three-day event happening from Nov. 18 to 20 at the Celebrity Sports Plaza and UP Diliman campus in Quezon City, the conference aims to provide new frameworks and perspectives for various stakeholders — Physical Education ( P. E.) teachers, coaches, instructors, trainers, managers, students, athletes and sports advocates — on how physical education, health and wellness, among others, are conveyed and understood in relation to global standards.

Done in partnership with the Sport Management Council of the Philippines ( SportPhil) and endorsed by the Department of Education ( DepEd), Commission on Higher Education ( CHEd), Philippine Sports Commission ( PSC) and Asian Council of Exercise and Sports Science ( ACESS), the 2016 International Conference on Sport Pedagogy, Health, and Wellness ( ICSPHW 2016) will feature more than 20 international and local scholars specializing in Physical Education and Sport Sciences who will discuss and share their research and studies in the various lectures set during the conference run.

Organizers said the objectives of ICSPHW 2016 are to impart knowledge on best practices and techniques in teaching P.E. geared towards inclusion, holistic development and in preparation for competitions; to showcase different perspectives and frameworks around the world in the effective administration of P.E.; to promote a culture of life-long fitness through the innovative and sport science-based practices in teaching P.E.; to provide an opportunity for communication and collaboration among participants and invited speakers on how to expand, improve and innovate the administration of P.E.; and to create opportunities for forging professional ties with colleagues in the ASEAN countries and the rest of the world.

“The idea for the conference was conceived four years ago with the thrust of bringing experts in to share their knowledge on the various facets of physical education and sports and the way they should be conveyed,” said Ronualdo Dizer, UP-CHK Dean, during the press conference for the event held last week at the Wolfgang’s Steakhouse in Resorts World Manila.

“In the Philippines, the situation leaves much to be desired as physical education is not given much exposure like those of academic subjects, which is unfortunate since most people these days live sedentary lives, busy with their computers and gadgets,” the UP-CHK Dean said.

“Through the conference we want to highlight the importance of games, play and physical activity for the development particularly of students. We want to retool physical education and heighten awareness on education and recreation,” Mr. Dizer added.

Notable speakers for the conference include ACESS cofounder Prof. Dr. Ming-Kai Chin, German Olympic Sports Confederation’s Prof. Dr. Gudrun Doll-Tepper, and Prof. G L Khanna of India.

Co-presented by Milo Philippines, ICSPHW 2016 hopes to attract over 800 attendees and is encouraging more people to register and expand their knowledge through the various workshops lined up all of three days.
