Luz at Ateneo
THE Ateneo Art Gallery opens the exhibition curated by Ambeth R. Ocampo, on Nov. 16, 6 p.m. Featuring recent and early works, the exhibition celebrates the 90th birthday of Arturo R. Luz, National Artist for Visual Arts. Beginning his career with figurative works, he then explored other modes of abstraction and stylized figuration in paintings, sculptures, prints, and collages. His works like and (both from the AAG Collection) marked a critical development in the history of Philippine modern art. Selected works featured in the exhibit will form part of the Ambeth R. Ocampo bequest to the Ateneo de Manila University. The Ateneo Art Gallery is at the Rizal Library Bldg., Ateneo de Manila campus, Katipunan Ave., Quezon City.
Architecture workshops
THE Goethe-Institut Philippinen in partnership with the University of the Philippines College of Architecture and the University of Santo Tomas will hold a series of workshops on sustainable designs in architecture by renowned architecture consultant Nadir Abdessemed. Workshops for students will be held on Nov. 21 1-6 p.m. at the UP College of Architecture, Diliman, Quezon City, and on Nov. 23, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Paredes Hall Function Room at the University of Santo Tomas. A workshop for professionals will be held on Nov 22, 1-6 p.m., at the same venue. A public lecture will be given on Nov. 23, 3-5 p.m., at the Paredes Hall Function Room at the University of Santo Tomas. Registration to the workshops is free and open to students/professionals. Register by sending one’s full name to: program@manila.goethe.org. Admission to the Public lecture is also free and open to all, with no pre-registration needed. All participants are required to bring a laptop. Limited slots are available on a first come, first served basis. Latecomers forfeit guaranteed slots.
Lecture at MCAD
INTERNATIONALLY renowned South Korean artist Haegue Yang will discuss her methods and inspirations in “Lingering Nous,” her first artist talk in the Philippines, on Nov. 17, 3 p.m., at the School of Design and Arts Cinema of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB). She is celebrated for her versatile use of Venetian blinds in her pieces, using it to generate commentary on human emotions, poetry, and politics. She has also utilized industrial fans, laundry racks, infrared heaters, decorative lights, and scent emitters.
