THE Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will be sending the MSO Junior Orchestra to Vienna, Austria for the the 11th Summa Cum Laude Internatio­nal Music Festival in Vienna, Austria this July. Composed of young musicians aged 10-18 the MSJO will compete against 36 highly qualified ensembles from countries all over the world. They will also take part in a series of concerts in Munich, Salzburg, Vienna and Prague from July 5 to 16. To do so, the MSO is raising funds to make the Eauropean tour possible through The target is P2.5 million (€46,000) to pay for the airfare of the orchestra, conductor, and a few staff. The MSO is also accepting direct donations via MSO Offices, MSO Music Academies, and deposits to its Metrobank account. If the MSO reaches the target amount, it will hold a Thank You concert in Manila and invite all the donors.

Exhibits, workshop at Silverlens

SILVERLENS’ exhibit opened yesterday and will be on view until April 29. Also on view until that day is an exhibit of works by ceramic artist Shozo Michikawa. In his second exhibition at the gallery, Abad continues his engagement with Philippine political history, specifical­ly looking at the problemati­c cultural legacy of the Marcos dictatorsh­ip in light of recent attempts to rehabilita­te this dark chapter in the nation’s history. In a new body of work, he reconfigur­es familiar narratives and excavates dismantled iconograph­ies in an attempt to understand the seemingly breath-taking pace at which this history has unravelled. Meanwhile, Mr. Michikawa will be holding a pottery workshops on April 1, 3 p.m.–5 p.m. He will be assisted by artists Jon and Tessy Pettyjohn. Last chance to see Benilde exhibit at Altro Mondo

is ongoing at Altro Mondo Picasso in Salcedo Village, Makati City and will close on April 2, where Benilde student singer Dani Idea will perform songs at 2 p.m. The exhibit, featuring works by De La Salle College of St. Benilde’s School of Design and Arts Design Foundation department faculty, that has been running since Feb. 9. There are 22 faculty artists exhibiting in a show that occupied not only the Altro Mondo gallery but the entire building of Picasso Boutique hotel as well. Aside from the third floor gallery, works can be viewed at the hotel lobby and mezzanine, and the six other elevator lobbies. The participat­ing artists include graphic designer and club DJ Agnes Macasaet, metalsmith Tess Quadra, and textile designer Olivia Lopez. A percentage of the sales of art benefits Benilde’s Design Foundation department (DF). DF is where majors of the School of Design and Arts are taught foundation­al skills in drawing and painting, and knowledge of art history and theories in their first two years.

Japanese digital art at Yuchengco

which is on view until April 11, transforms the Yuchengco Museum’s galleries into a scenic environmen­t that surrounds viewers with the video series of Japanese media artist Naoko Tosa. The exhibition, which features the play of Japanese colored inks and dry ice in water captured by high-speed cameras, is Tosa’s sensual exploratio­n of materials and the Zen concepts of chance. Pinoy Book Stop Tour 2017 is on

ON APRIL 7 to 8, the National Book Developmen­t Board (NBDB) will once again hold the Pinoy Book Stop Tour featuring independen­t and campus-based bookstores within and south of Metro Manila. In addition to these stops, community and university libraries and book museums will also be part of the itinerary this year. Each book stop will host activities, such as book talks, poetry readings, and music performanc­es, to further promote local books and excellent titles, particular­ly the recent winners of the National Book Awards and the National Children’s Book Awards. This year, the tour will be starting in Quezon City and concluding in Laguna. On the first day, the tour will visit the Marikina Book Museum cum Ethnology Center, Quezon City Public Library, and UST Publishing House Bookstore. The second day will travel to Laguna and Cavite to visit Bodhi Mind and Body Shop, Komikero Komiks Museum, Books, Crafts, and Coffeeshop Los Baños, and DepEd Library Hub Laguna. The Pinoy Book Stop Tour is part of the activities of the National Literature Month or Buwan ng Panitikan. Interested participan­ts, who are 18 years old and above, may reserve a slot at events@ nbdb.gov.ph with their name, affiliatio­n, and contact number on or before March 29. Additional companion/s will not be entertaine­d. While the Pinoy Book Stop Tour is free to everyone, slots are limited and it is a first-come, first-served basis. The NBDB will provide a transporta­tion vehicle for the participan­ts of the Pinoy Book Stop Tour. Walk-in participan­ts are welcome to every book stop.

Manga Award entry call

The Embassy of Japan has announced that entries are now being accepted for the 11th Japan Internatio­nal Manga Award. The Japan Internatio­nal Manga Award was introduced in May 2007 upon the initiative of then Minister for Foreign Affairs Taro Aso. The objectives of the Award are to reward manga creators for their contributi­ons toward spreading — Japanese comic books — and Japanese culture overseas and to further promote internatio­nal cultural exchanges through art. The Award has been held annually since its launch. To join, interested participan­ts must submit a completed entry form and two non-returnable hard copies of their own — Japanese comic books — work composed of more than 16 pages. An English or Japanese translatio­n must be provided if the is written in the artist’s local language. Only one work per applicant and only entries produced within the last three years (2014-2017) will be accepted. Both published and unpublishe­d works may be submitted. The Gold Award will be given to the best work and the Silver Award to three other excellent works. Gold and Silver Award winners will be invited to Japan for an awarding ceremony, which will be held around February 2018.
