Peak opens first concept store in the Philippines

- Michael Angelo S. Murillo

SINCE descending on the country early in the decade, Chinese active wear brand Peak has steadily built its standing in the local market, enough to finally open its first concept store in the Philippines at Robinsons Place Manila.

One of the fastest-growing sporting brands in the world, primarily fuelled by its inroads internationally with tie-ups like that with the National Basketball Association and world basketball governing body FIBA, Peak has widened its product offering through the years to move beyond basketball and offer as well complete gear for training, running, and women’s, which can be found in the recently opened store.

“The timing is just right to finally open the first Peak concept store in the country. Peak has been here for nearly a decade now and it has steadily gained footing in the market. Since Peak is competing with the big brands, now it was time to position ourselves,” said Jonathan Chenglay, owner of the Peak concept store at Robinsons Place Manila, in an interview with Business

World as he talked about of their decision to finally open a standalone store.

Mr. Chenglay, who also owns the Peak outlet store at the Riverbanks Center in Marikina City, said that they carefully planned for the first concept store, particularly the items to be sold with the end view of giving customers more choices.

“Observing the market, we really put much thought [into] what we are going to put here. So some of the items here you will not find in shopping malls carrying the Peak brand like SM, Robinsons, and Gaisano or sports shops like Olympic Village and Toby’s,” said Mr. Chenglay, who also highlighted the foot traffic and diverse market of the Manila area as factors considered in choosing Robinsons Place Manila as the location for the first Peak concept store in the country.

To mark the opening of the store last week, Peak brought in NBA player and brand ambassador Matthew Dellavedova of the Milwaukee Bucks, who also got to promote his first signature Peak shoes, the Delly 1.

The shoe, which features Peak’s latest technology in design and cushioning, is available in various color ways and sells for P4,995.

While not giving much detail, Mr. Chenglay said there are plans on his end to add more Peak concept stores down the line, seeing the potential for growth for the brand.

“The brand is still growing enhanced by key partnerships with known international brands ambassadors like Matthew Dellavedova, Dwight Howard (Charlotte Hornets), Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs), Lou Williams (Los Angeles Clippers), and George Hill (Sacramento Kings),” Mr. Chenglay said.

“There is still room for expansion definitely. Primarily Peak is known as a basketball product and we are a basketball nation, so the chance for growth is there surely,” he added.

The Peak concept store is located at the Level 2 Pedro Gil Wing of Robinsons Place Manila.
