Chinese classic in MCAD’s Sept. film screenings lineup

FILMS WHICH focus on the tensions and frustratio­ns at home, and the metaphors of a life under a dictatorsh­ip, will be showcased in the monthly screenings at The Museum of Contempora­ry Art and Design (MCAD) of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.

Raise the Red Lantern by Zhang Yimou is the featured movie on Sept. 20. An adaptation of the novel Wives and Concubines by Su Tong, it narrates the story of a woman who becomes the fourth wife of a wealthy lord, and the events that soon followed.

This is Not a Film by Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, scheduled on Sept. 22, depicts a day in the life of Panahi, who is currently in jail and waiting for the verdict of the appeals court.

Carlos Saura’s Cria Cuervos, slated for Sept. 29, tells the story of three orphaned sisters who are now under the care of their stern aunt and handicappe­d grandmothe­r.

September’s selection is curated by Jan Philippe Carpio, a writer-filmmaker who has worked on several short films and four feature-length movies.

All screenings will be at the 12th Floor SDA Cinema with noon and 3 p.m. time slots.

All shows are free and open to the public. For non-CSB visitors, prepare an ID for access to the DLS-CSB SDA Building.
