AMIC sets premier Asian communication event on Sept. 27 to 29
THE ASIAN Media Information and Communication Centre, Inc. (AMIC) will hold its 25th Annual Conference on Sept. 27 to 29 at Miriam College, Quezon City.
World- renowned experts in communication and journalism education in Asia Pacifi c will gather to share their knowledge on media and information and literacy at AMIC’s annual conference, considered to be the premier event on Asian communication media. With the theme, “Rethinking Communication in a Resurgent Asia,” the conference will be graced by UNESCO Assistant Director- General for Communication Frank La Rue, who will deliver the keynote address.
Some 300 participants from the region and other parts of the world are expected to attend, such as academics, professionals, information offi cers, and policy makers. Participants can expect to gain more knowledge on various topics including: Asian philosophies, religions, and communication; Asian communication theories and paradigms; freedom of expression in a post-truth era; communication and culture; communication education and training; and media and information literacy principles and practices and teaching- learning approaches. Other topics include communication media, communication strategies and approaches, inclusive knowledge societies, global communication, and Asian business communication.
Legends in communication and journalism education in Asia Pacifi c that have confi rmed their participation in the conference include: Dr. John Lent, professor at Temple University’s School of Communication and Theater; Dr. Wimal Dissayanake, professor at University of Hawaii’s Academy of Creative Media; Dr. Shelton Gunaratne, professor emeritus at Minnesota State University; Dr. Cherian George, professor at Hong Kong Baptist University; Dasho Kinley Dorji, former Ministry of Information and Communications secretary in Bhutan; and Dr. Ronny Adhikarya, who used to be affi liated with The World Bank, and former representative of United Nations, as well as ambassador in Pakistan.
Other communication experts who will be present at the conference include Professor Ang Peng Hwa, Mr. Arun Mahizhnan, and Dr. Peixin Cao. They will be joined by Filipino communication icons including AMIC Chairperson Crispin C. Maslog and Dr. Florangel Rosario- Braid.
Another highlight of the conference is the 2017 AMIC Asia Communication Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in various fi elds of communication such as research, education, institution building, and journalism.
This international conference is organized by Asian Media Information and Communication Centre, Inc. in partnership with Asian Institute of Journalism and Management, Miriam College, Philippine Women’s University, Novotel Manila Araneta Center, U-hop and tourism promotion partners led by DoT’s Tourism Promotions Board, Quezon City local government and Quezon City Tourism Council.
