Davao City to build P5M dog pound

- Carmencita A. Carillo

THE CITY government is aiming to complete before the end of the year a P5-million impounding facility in Malagos, Calinan to accommodate more stray cats and dogs. “The new impounding facility will be located in a one-hectare area which is bigger than the present impounding facility in Maa,” City Veterinarian Office (CVO) head Cerelyn B. Pinili said. The Maa facility can only accommodate up to 150 dogs. Ms. Pinili said the CVO Team captures an average of 20 stray dogs daily. Out of these, only 10-15% are claimed by owners per month, “which shows there are many irresponsible dog owners.” The City Pound only keeps the stray animals for a maximum of three days. The owner is required to pay P500 per day upon claiming the animal. Ms. Pinili said the City Pound currently has only one vehicle for catching stray animals, but they are expecting to procure two more. —
