Amateur golfer Yuka Saso looks to continue making country proud, hopes for improved golf program
ONE of the celebrated athletes in 2018 after helping the Philippines to two gold medals in the Asian Games in Indonesia, amateur golfer Yuka Saso said she is looking forward to continue making the country proud as she competes in various tournaments even as she said she is hoping for an improved program for the sport of golf.
One of the recipients of the Athlete of the Year Award handed out by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA), Ms. Saso shared that she is very thankful of the award which only serves as further motivation for her.
“I’m so happy to have received this award. Unfortunately my teammates were not here (Bianca Pagdanganan and Lois Kaye Go), but I’m sure they are also happy with this award,” said Ms. Saso following the annual PSA Awards Night ceremonies held at the Manila Hotel on Tuesday night.
Ms. Saso won the women’s golf event in the Asian Games in August and joined forces with Misses Pagdanganan and Go to bag the team title.
The feat earned for the three the PSA’s Athlete of the Year award, along with fellow gold medallist Hidilyn Diaz (weightlifting) and Margielyn Didal (skateboarding).
“We are proud of our accomplishment in the Asian Games. We did not expect to win but we’re happy we made it. We just had fun that week,” Ms. Saso said.
She went on to say that she will continue working hard and joining different tournaments to work on her game and a better player.
“My goal is to be a better player. I have upcoming tournaments, including the women’s amateur event in August in the States. I hope to do well in various competitions both here and abroad,” she added.
“I’m happy that golf is getting is due recognition now. Hopefully the country’s golf program keeps on improving so we can continue making the Philippines proud,” Ms. Saso added. —
