Embassy of India in Manila marks 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi
THE Embassy of India in Manila celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi this year with a series of events last Oct. 1 and 2. A highlight this year were three visual tributes by artists in the Philippines to Mahatma Gandhi through their art. Ryan Managaysay, a social studies student at Samar State University has used his skill to transform a large fern leaf, also known as ‘salikupkop’ into a leaf portrait of Mahatma Gandhi. Ryan has earned national fame for his unique art form, having earlier done similar portraits of influential personalities. Neil Alegro, a young Filipino calligrapher, paid his tributes by hand-lettering Gandhi’s timeless wisdom. Using his artistic skill, he has transformed two of Gandhi’s quotations into calligraphy pieces. The third visual tribute was an art workshop by Sprout Art Curriculum.
