Em­bassy of In­dia in Manila marks 150th birth an­niver­sary of Ma­hatma Gandhi

THE Em­bassy of In­dia in Manila cel­e­brated the 150th birth an­niver­sary of Ma­hatma Gandhi this year with a se­ries of events last Oct. 1 and 2. A high­light this year were three vis­ual trib­utes by artists in the Philip­pines to Ma­hatma Gandhi through their art. Ryan Mana­gaysay, a so­cial stud­ies stu­dent at Sa­mar State Univer­sity has used his skill to trans­form a large fern leaf, also known as ‘sa­likup­kop’ into a leaf por­trait of Ma­hatma Gandhi. Ryan has earned na­tional fame for his unique art form, hav­ing ear­lier done sim­i­lar por­traits of in­flu­en­tial per­son­al­i­ties. Neil Ale­gro, a young Filipino cal­lig­ra­pher, paid his trib­utes by hand-let­ter­ing Gandhi’s time­less wis­dom. Us­ing his artistic skill, he has trans­formed two of Gandhi’s quo­ta­tions into cal­lig­ra­phy pieces. The third vis­ual trib­ute was an art work­shop by Sprout Art Cur­ricu­lum.
