NLEX fights for survival

-

NLEX fights for survival in its bid to clinch a playoff berth when it battles Alaska in the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

With their campaign on the line, the lowly Road Warriors (2-5 won-lost) try to avoid elimination when they face the Aces (3-3) at 7 p.m.

Magnolia (2-4), meanwhile, hopes to translate its recent win against Alaska into a good stretch when it tackles Columbian (4-5) at 4:30 p.m. Even the return of National Team Coach Yeng Guiao could not save NLEX from rolling to its second consecutive loss last week.

The Road Warriors were beaten by the defending champion San Miguel Beermen, 121-111, a loss that put the team in a precarious spot at 10th and 11th along with the NorthPort Batang Pier.

Guiao admitted that it seemed his sacrifices for the national team has given NLEX some downside.

“It’s also been a struggle to be out of the country coaching the national team and spending my focus and time for that purpose,” Guiao said. “I think that’s also taking some toll on our team.” Despite the skid, the fiery coach remained dedicated to the flag.

“That’s part of the sacrifice anybody has to make for the national team,” he said. “We’ll try to make the most out of the time and focus back on the NLEX job, and try to survive to get to the next round.”

Making it more challenging is the absence of key players.

Kiefer Ravena is still serving his 18-month suspension by Fiba, while Kevin Alas reinjured his ACL. Larry Fonacier, meanwhile, has a strained calf muscle. Ramon Rafael Bonilla
