TITO CUEVAS’S ‘IN BOLD STROKES’ AT ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE MANILLE

ALLIANCE Française de Manille, in partnership with Metro Gallery, presents Tito Cuevas: In Bold Strokes, a book by Dr. Teresita G. Maceda which wonderfully captures the life and art of the artist. The book is accompanied by an art exhibition of the works by the late Cuevas from the collection of his family. The public exhibition is open until September 14.

Tito Cuevas: In Bold Strokes, by Dr. Teresita G. Maceda, wonderfully captures the life and art of Tito Cuevas. The exhibit is a visual supplement to the book, a tribute to a man who once said, “There is nothing more beautiful than speaking and expressing yourself without saying a word.”

Through her masterfully strung narrative in Tito Cuevas: In Bold Strokes, Dr. Maceda allows us glimpses not only of the art but also of the person of the late Cebuano abstract expressionist Wenceslao Regala “Tito” Cuevas Jr. It is fitting tribute to a man who wanted to be remembered for his humanity above all else.

In writing about Tito Cuevas, Dr. Maceda transports us from the land of Malantic—Tito’s roots in Pampanga—to the carefree young man sent to study in Manila who carries the reader with him on the impulsive flight to Cebu. There, he eventually settled and became the respected man and uncompromising artist that he was. This exhibition, which serves to accompany the book, offers but a sampling of his art, a testament to the prolific artist that Tito was. It is meant to be a visual supplement to the book, a platform which aims to give Tito a voice once again.
