Global Cebu downs Yangon
RUFO Sanchez converted a penalty as Global Cebu FC defeated group leader Yangon United of Myanmar, 2-1, in Group G of the ASEAN Zone of the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup last night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Metro Manila.
Just when it seemed that Global Cebu would have to settle for a draw, Kekere Moukailou fouled Sanchez in the penalty area in the 4th minute of the six-minute added time in the second half to be awarded a penalty kick.
Global Cebu drew first blood in the 79th minute via a header by Darryl Roberts, who picked up a cross from Dominic del Rosario.
A last minute goal at the 90th from Lwin Maung Maung allowed Yangon United to level the match at 1all.
Despite the win, the home team continues to languish at the bottom of Group G with a 1-1-2 win-draw-loss record.
But chances are no longer slim for Global Cebu with still two matches remaining in the group stage.
Yangon United continues to enjoy the top spot with 9 points off a 3-0-1 card, four points clear of Bali United, which occupies the second spot.
Only the winners and the best runner-up will advance to the Zonal semifinals in this league.
Global Cebu hopes to continue its winning ways when it faces FLC Than Hoa of Vietnam on April 11 still at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
FLC Than Hoa has the same standing with Global Cebu but takes the third spot with its goal difference of -2. Global Cebu has a GD of -3.
