Change of scenery

- Lia Andanar Yu

After over two months, it is slowly sinking in that I am where I am. From four seasons to two. I have moved from the cold of winter to the heat of summer. Well, technically, it is already the rainy season but it still feels like summer.

In place of my favorite view of cypress trees, I am refreshingly greeted by forest-like rows of trees with lush greens. This mini neighborhood forest shields my new little haven from the intense rays of the sun. I count myself fortunate that we found this quiet space for us with the occasional singing of birds and crowing of roosters in the morning.

I am a self-certified homebody who can keep busy with books to read, things to organize and inspiring thoughts to write about. In the weeks leading up to the move, I would spend hours on end in every corner of our previous home to sort and pack.

After what seemed like a full day of busily yet calmly going through each nook and cranny, my husband knowingly suggested for me to leave everything as it was so we could go out and grab a bite. I hesitated for a split-second but quickly got dressed as I knew he needed the break as much as I did. After a quick meal at one of our favorite cafes, we headed straight back home. I resumed sorting with renewed vigor and clarity.

Know when you need a change of scenery and seize the chance to take it.

When my husband was in hospital for a week due to dengue fever last month, it was not the needles nor the constant monitoring of his vital signs that bothered him. It was being stuck in the confines of the four walls of his hospital room. Even the idyllic view of the ocean beyond the windows was not enough to distract him from those four walls. It was only for a week yet he wanted a change in his surroundings.

“We are amid exactly the same view and things day in and day out. Routine, af ter all, makes life easier in so many ways.

Often though, we are amid exactly the same view and things day in and day out. Routine, after all, makes life easier in so many ways. It helps us do the things that need to be done on a daily basis and in a reliable fashion. Routine helps us lead productive and well managed lives. Sometimes we cannot afford a change in scenery and have to wait a whole year for a much prepared for and planned vacation. So even if all you can do at the moment is change your cellphone wallpaper to a much more uplifting photo or motto that brings a smile to your face or a spark of hope in your heart, make that change right now.
