Kwago and Comma form Curators Lab to discuss the role of curators in Philippine contemporary art

Under Kwago’s publishing and curatorial platform Comma, Roy Voragen and Czyka Tumaliuan started Curator’s Lab to provide a collaborative space to question, investigate, discover and test different approaches to making, showing, experiencing and evaluating exhibitions.

On 29 August at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Curator’s Lab opens conversations on the role curators play in contemporary art. The forum aims to understand the curator’s thought processes and creativity, and how these are transformed and translated into exhibitions and ongoing discourses.

“Curator’s Lab is an open-ended inquiry about curatorial practices within the context of contemporary art. We are very thankful for MCAD and DLS-CSB for giving our first gathering a home,” Tumaliuan said.

The invited curators — Joselina Cruz, Patrick Flores, Tony Godrey and Mayumi Hirano — work in institutions and independently to see diverse viewpoints on curating. Curators Lab hope to learn from each curator’s unique way of curating, how they work with artists and how they respond to various contexts, spaces and challenges.

“The forum is a good way to bring together artists, curators and those who are curious about the practice to exchange thoughts and learn from one another,” Voragen said.
