Senate forms SDG panel
A new committee focusing on the country’s compliance with the United Nations ‘(UN) sustainable development goal (SDG) was formed in the Senate on Tuesday.
The Senate adopted Senate Resolution 122 which formed the Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation and Future Thinking during the plenary session.
The new panel will be composed of 15 members and all matters related to the UN 2030 agenda for sustainable development and the assessment of the country’s performance will be tackled in the committee.
It will also help the country attain the SDG targets through policies, strategies and actions for the development of desirable futures by using a multi-disciplinary approach in illuminating possibilities, outlining policy choices, and assessing alternatives.
SR 122 was sponsored by Senate Majority Floor Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri and was unanimously approved by the senators.
The UN has enumerated 17 SDG which will be a “blueprint” to pursue a sustainable future.
These goals include no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth. The SDG will also sustain industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice and strong institutions and partnerships.
