Marikina urges LGU ‘to push for discipline’

- By Neil Alcober

Marikina City Mayor Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro on Wednesday urged other local government units (LGU) to impose the necessary ordinances that will not only enforce, but also institutionalize order in city’s street, saying that “consistent and fair implementation of these ordinances is key.”

The mayor made this statement in line with the forthcoming deadline on the clearing of public roads and sidewalks of obstructions, vendors and illegal settlers.

“We owe this to our constituents, to the people who placed their trust in us to lead our respective cities,” Teodoro said. “Furthermore, beyond ordinances, we should be able to teach our children, the younger generation, that it is up to them to continue the discipline we are inculcating now.”

“We hope that Marikina City’s example would encourage other cities to push for discipline and right conduct in using public streets and public property. It should be emphasized that a clean and orderly environment leads to social transformation shaping peaceful, secure and balanced communities, eventually contributing to the further economic development of the city,” the mayor added.

Teodoro expressed gratitude to Interior Secretary Eduardo Año for lauding Marikina City’s efforts in striving for order within Metro Manila.

Año commended the city government during a recent press conference on the midterm assessment on the compliance of Metro Manila LGU with the directive of the President to clear roads, sidewalks of obstruction.

According to the Department of the Interior and Local Government chief, the Marikina City government has been enforcing measures to clear public roads of obstructions even before the DILG issued a directive which set the 60-day deadline.
