Ricci’s return excites UP
It was exciting but of course I can’t dwell on what I’m feeling right now
Ricci Rivero re-introduced himself in collegiate basketball community with a scintillating alley-oop slam last Wednesday as his University of the Philippines (UP) edged Far Eastern University (FEU), 61-55, at the start of University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball competition.
It was Rivero’s first game back after undergoing a one-year residency. He spent his first two seasons with De La Salle University and in his first game as a Fighting Maroon, he never missed a beat.
“It was exciting but of course I can’t dwell on what I’m feeling right now,” said Rivero, who had seven points and six rebounds for UP.
“We can’t dwell on what we are feeling. We need to focus on what’s happening in game. If someone makes a highlight we just have to focus on the game and get back on defense. It’s not about making highlight or whatsoever,” he added.
Rivero was overwhelmed by the support of UP community at the Araneta Coliseum and he promised to do better in the coming games.
Now playing as one of supporting players for reigning Most Valuable Player Bright Akhuetie and Juan and Javi Gomez de Liano, Rivero does not mind playing second fiddle to those Fighting Maroons as his goal is to help UP win the crown this Season 82.
“It was so overwhelming especially the UP crowd, and my teammates and my coaches, I’m so happy I ended up here,” Rivero said.
“For me, I’m so happy about it, the UP community really welcomed me. I’m still thankful for the green (La Salle) side,” he added.
Rivero and the Fighting Maroons eye a 2-0 start against University of Santo Tomas today at the Big Dome.
