Nachos… and mucho mas

A night of mingling over crunchy nachos, mouthwatering salsa and Mexican feel-good music transpired at the celebration of the 209th year of Mexico’s sovereignty held at Mexican Ambassador to the Philippines Gerardo Lozano’s rustic abode. “It’s a good way to celebrate the National Day of Mexico because a lot of Mexicans living here in the Philippines are coming in and they will have a chance to socialize with each other,” Juan Gabriel Espejo Ceballos, head of bilateral cooperation and economic affairs of the embassy, told the Daily Tribune.
Ambassador Lozano, together with his congenial other half, Mariza Arciniega, welcomed guests to their residence and prepared an evening that gave everyone a taste of the Mexican life.
But for some Mexican locals, that night was something that will usher them back home.
The 15th of September was both a day of celebration and consolation.
The Philippines and Mexico have maintained a good relationship throughout the years and shared a common history by being former colonies of Spain.
“The Philippines and Mexico have been friends for many years and we treasure this kind of celebration,” Ceballos added.
Guest band Mariachi Emmanuel performed for the guests, who hummed along with the tunes.
Mexican-influenced companies like Casa de Tortilla, Corona, Dos Equis and Jose Cuervo served Mexican-inspired food and beverages.
The commemoration highlighted not only the culture and customs of Mexico but also celebrated the firm and long-lasting relationship it has with the Philippines.
