SMC backs Cone’s Gilas coaching stint

- By Bea Micaller

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is getting closer to acquiring Tim Cone as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Cone’s mother company in the Philippine Basketball Association, the San Miguel Corporation (SMC), issued the green light for the multi-titled mentor to call the shots for Gilas Pilipinas in the men’s basketball tournament of the biennial meet from 30 November to 11 December.

SMC sports director Alfrancis Chua said SMC president Ramon Ang is willing to lend Cone, especially if the country’s pride is at stake.

“If it’s for the country, then, I together with Boss Ramon Ang will give our full support to him,” Chua said.

If ever, this will not be the first time for Cone to call the shots for the Nationals.

He was also at the helm when the national squad, which was dubbed as the Centennial team, bagged the silver medal in the 1998 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea.

In a previous statement, Cone admitted that SBP president Al Panlilio already reached out to discuss the possibility of hiring him as national mentor in the wake of the squad’s disastrous finish in the FIBA Basketball World Cup two weeks ago.

He, however, stressed that his focus now is with Ginebra, which is now competing in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

“I’ve been in conversation with SBP president Al Panlilio regarding SEA Games head coaching position for basketball,” Cone told Daily Tribune in a text message.

“On Monday, after talking to my family, Mr. Panlilio and I will continue our conversation regarding the appointment at which time we will come to a resolution.”
