Electric post relocation to affect Roxas Blvd. traffic

- Alvin Murcia

To give way to the ongoing construction of the Light Rail Transit (LRT)-1 Cavite Extension Project, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Transportation (DoTr) held a coordination meeting to plan the relocation of electric posts along Roxas Boulevard.

Officials of the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center, DoTr and Meralco met to work at minimizing the impact on traffic of the relocation of the electric posts on a portion of Roxas Boulevard in

Parañaque City.

Several Meralco electric posts located between Redemptorist Road and Bradco Avenue will be relocated in phases within a 70-day period.

The MMDA was asked by DoTr’s private contractors to allow them to occupy one to two lanes of the affected portion as their working area.

The metro agency has yet to give clearance for the electric post relocation project, since work would affect both private and public utility vehicles traversing daily both directions of the major thoroughfare.

It wants to ensure that a traffic management plan is in place before the project starts to ensure a minimal effect on traffic flow.

The LRT-1 Cavite Extension Pr0oject will provide an additional 11.7 kilometers to the existing 20.7-km LRT-1 system and will traverse southward, covering the cities of Parañaque and Las Piñas in Metro Manila and Bacoor in Cavite.

The project is expected to increase the LRT-1 ridership from 500,000 to 800,000 per day and reduce travel time between Baclaran and Bacoor, Cavite from one to two hours to only 25 minutes.
