Honor sacrifices of frontliners

- KRISTINA MARALIT

Remember the sacrifices of law enforcers during this time of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

This was the message conveyed by Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, Gen. Archie Gamboa, during Friday’s commemoration of the country’s 122nd Independence Day.

“They are our modern-day heroes during this time of crisis,” part of Gamboa’s public address stated, as read by PNP Deputy Chief for Administration, PLt. Gen. Camilo Cascolan during the flag-raising rites in Camp Crame.

Gamboa lauded the 205,000-strong police force for showing resolve and courage by serving as front liners in the government’s battle against the viral respiratory illness while at the same time fulfilling their duties as guardians of security and peace.

No second thought

“We have many brave policemen who did not think twice to plunge into battle to suppress the pandemic. We also leaned on their quick response in times of calamity and disaster. The nation witnessed the bravery, hard work, and sacrifice displayed by our police force. We showcased a heart that is patriotic by fulfilling our duty to serve, protect, and take care of the citizenry,” expressed the PNP Chief.

“Let us recognize, thank, and salute them,” he added.

And despite the gargantuan challenges being faced by the organization in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, with their own personnel being infected by the disease, Gamboa vowed for the PNP to remain unceasing in answering their calling to be of service to the flag and the people.

388 infected

As of Thursday, 388 police personnel are confirmed to have contracted COVID-19, with 5 recorded deaths.

The number of policemen suspected of being carriers of the virus were listed at 785, while 696 are probable cases.

“I am confident that with the help of the Lord Almighty we will surpass together this crisis we are facing right now,” Gamboa ended.
