Jeepney drivers residing in Quezon City who were sidelined by the ongoing quarantine in Metro Manila now have an alternate means of livelihood after the QC local government entered into a partnership with Lalamove.

The program will also provide more affordable options for business owners who are reliant on the delivery app for the transport of their products.

LalaJeep, which will be piloting in the city, will be the latest addition to the delivery app’s fleet to cater to the delivery needs of QC residents.

With the city home to thousands of jeepney drivers, the city mayor said income from LalaJeep would be a big help to those who will sign up.

The program will also provide more affordable options for business owners who are reliant on the delivery app for the transport of their products.

During the preparation for the program’s launch, around 200 jeepney drivers have already signed for the LalaJeep fleet.

Mona Yap, QC Small Business and Cooperatives Development and Promotions Office (SBCDPO) head, said LalaJeep will also help businesses in their logistics needs.

“As many businesses are transitioning to online which demands delivery services, this LalaJeep will be a great support not just for jeepney drivers but also for small businesses,” Yap said.

Dannah Majarocon, Lalamove Philippines managing director, said, “This project is aligned with Lalamove’s goal to empower communities and uplift the livelihood of those who are heavily affected by the pandemic. This will allow our services better to suit every business owner and day-to-day user’s delivery needs. This project is a testament that with governmental support, we can deliver possibilities faster.”

The city’s Task Force on Transportation and Traffic Management (TFTTM) will screen and assist in the registration of the jeepney drivers, while the SBCDPO shall facilitate group training sessions for their jeepney driver constituents, to enable them to understand and navigate the delivery app.

Serving as an alternative source of income, both the QC local government and Lalamove hope the LalaJeep project will help keep jeepney drivers afloat until they are allowed to ply their routes by the national government.
