- BY PAT C. SANTOS

Seven policemen had the surprise of their lives when they were locked up by an angry mob in the house of drug suspects they were apprehending in a buy-bust operation last Friday in San Andres Bukid, Manila.

Police from Manila Police Station (PS) 5 were effecting the arrest of suspects Saadudin Alawiya, 28, and Abdullah Maute, 29, after they handed illegal drugs bought by a poseur buyer.

As the backup team made its way into the house on Amatista Street at about 5 p.m., an angry mob outside padlocked the house and confronted the law enforcers, saying their operation was illegal and not authorized by the Manila Police District.

An angry mob outside padlocked the house and confronted the law enforcers, saying their operation was illegal.

Apparently, as the cops were conducting an inventory of evidence, the suspects managed to call their relatives who stormed the house and blocked all exits.

The raiding team was trapped inside the house for almost four hours as they called for support.

Reinforcement from PS 5 had to placate the crowd and convince them of the legality of the operation and free the officers inside.

As the team tried to take Alawiya and Maute to be brought to the station for investigation, some of the suspects’ relatives tried to spring them from their custody.

The police reinforcement managed to secure the suspects and push away the crowd.

Confiscated during the raid were eight plastic sachets containing suspected shabu, with an estimated street value of P258,400, a P1,000 bill and the boodle money amounting to P6,000 and various non-drug paraphernalia.

The suspects will be charged for various violations of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 at the Office of the Manila City Prosecutor.
