Explain chicken brouhaha, Cebu execs told
The Cebu City Council sought an explanation from the city’s Executive Department to account for at least 17,000 pieces of donated dressed chickens which were intended to be given to poor families and its distribution plan as confusion among residents have been raised on how these were being given out.
North District City Councilor Joy Augustus Young directed the appropriate offices in City Hall, the Mayor’s office and the Department of Social Welfare Services to give the council a report if the city did, in fact, receive 17,000 dressed chickens from a Thailand-based company called CP Foods and to inform the council what or how were this distributed to the poor and deserving families in each barangay.
In his privilege speech during the City Council’s regular session, Young said that the City Council was not aware of the donation.
“It seems nobody in City Hall could give me a categorical answer about the donation. To this date, no resolution for the deed of donation, which could possibly amount to P1.5 million, has been passed in the Council. No press release has been made,” Young said.
He also revealed that since last week, he has been receiving several inquiries from people through texts and messages if they can avail of the donated dressed chickens or if they will be included among the beneficiaries.
From what he found out, the dressed chickens have been distributed to the barangays through the Mayor’s Information and Liaison Office (MILO), which was also said to be selling dressed chickens as well. But Young said he didn’t want to accuse anybody of any wrongdoing at this time.
“Are this the same chickens that we are talking about?” Young asked.
