BUCKET LIST
The Masters leads top 10 golf course
It’s a course that you literally have to use all clubs in your bag to be conquered
The Masters, a Jack Nicklaus masterpiece at the Manila Southwoods in Carmona, Cavite, has topped a random mini-survey conducted by the Tribune Golf.
Four of the 25 respondents placed the Masters on top, edging Orchard’s Palmer for the honor with 118 points.
“It’s a course that you literally have to use all clubs in your bag to be conquered,” said Musong Castillo, a veteran sports journalist who placed the Masters on top of his list.
The Masters made the list of 17 respondents, consistently placing in the upper rung of choices.
The Palmer course in Dasmariñas, Cavite, on the other hand, was on the list of 18 respondents to take the No. 2 spot, just two points ahead of Wack Wack’s fabled East course in Mandaluyong City.
The East, former home of the Philippine Open, was picked No. 1 four times to take the third spot with 102 points.
Tagaytay Midlands was top choice of two respondents and ended up at No. 4 with 91 points.
Rounding out the top half of the list is the exclusive Manila Golf Club at No. 5 with 88 points.
Sta. Elena Golf and Country Club in Cabuyao, Laguna took the sixth spot with 85 points on the strength of four first places.
No. 7 was the Country Club in Sta. Rosa Laguna which collected 73 points while Luisita, a classic course in Tarlac, took the eighth spot with 70 points.
The last two spots were taken by Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club in Batangas (54 points) and Anvaya Cove Golf and Country Club in Bataan (53 points).
The informal survey does not paint the accurate picture of the public’s preference, but gives an idea of which courses are considered excellent.
The 25 respondents are avid golfers that included four veteran golf journalists — Lito Tacujan formerly of the Philippine Star, Jun Engracia formerly of the Philippine Daily
Inquirer and Business Mirror golf editor Mike Besa.
Under the simplified computation, 10 points are awarded for the top choice, 9 for No. 2, 8 for No. 3, 7 for No. 4, 6 for No. 5, 5 for No. 6, 4 for No. 7, 3 for No. 8, 2 for No. 9 and 1 for No. 10.
