The issue surrounding its team owner prompted Blackwater to get a new moniker in the resumption of the 45th season of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy said they decided to change their moniker from Elite to Bossing after he got involved in a controversy that nearly got him in trouble.

In a media statement three weeks ago, Sy admitted that his team conducted a workout without the blessing of the PBA and the Games and Amusement Board.

With this, he contemplated on selling his franchise for P150 million, saying that he is being bullied and pushed to the wall by the league, who slapped him with a P100,000 penalty while subjecting the team to undergo swab testing and a seven-day quarantine.

Although he retracted his threat to leave the PBA, the damage was done and PBA chairman Ricky Vargas already hinted that they would impose a separate sanction on his statement that was detrimental to the league.

Now, he is changing their moniker in a bid to have a clean, brand-new start.

“We’re now moving forward from all the issues the past weeks,” Sy told

“We need positivity and good vibes now that we are fighting COVID-19.”

Sy said the name “Bossing” is a breath of fresh air. He added that their new moniker is not just a tag for comedian Vic Sotto, but also signify that they are a brand for the masses – their target market.

“It’s all part of our marketing plan for next year to make Blackwater known to the people,” he said.

“We have new products coming out next year and this is perfect for our marketing strategy.”
