Kim Mangrobang’s preparation for the Tokyo Olympics suffered a blow after sustaining an injury during her training in Portugal. Triathlon Association of the Philippines president Tom Carrasco said the two-time Southeast Asian Games champion suffered a thigh strain injury that would derail her buildup for the Summer Games next year.

With that, she missed the rest of the season, including the International Triathlon Union World Cup in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic last 13 September.

Carrasco said Mangrobang already underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and she was advised to take an active rest until she fully recovers.

“Kim had a minor injury, it was a strained thigh muscle but the MRI results said that it was just muscle fatigue,” said Carrasco, also the president of the Southeast Asian Triathlon Association.

“She was not able to compete in the Karlovy World Cup last week because of the injury.”

The 29-year-old Mangrobang has been consistent in her training in the Portuguese town of Desmor since January under the guidance of noted mentor Sergio Santos.

Carrasco said with no more tournament left on their list, Mangrobang is now focusing on her immediate recovery, which might take her a couple of months.

He added that they are now mapping her succeeding schedule as they are looking at the possibly of sending her back to the country before the end of the year and then restart her Olympic qualification quest in 2021.

“The recovery period might be around one to two months. She is now on low intensity training,” Carrasco said.
