The Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) completed the construction of the P3-million nursery and consolidation area for the production of sweet potato.

Regional Project Coordination Office (RPCO 3) official Mary Joyce Quiros said the project has attained “100 percent physical accomplishment.”

Quiros, together with I-REAP officer Carissa Cabubus, Social and Environmental Safeguards officer Jes Surla, geomapping and governance data officer Maurice Pineda, I-REAP’s Danilo Ramoso and the Provincial Project Management and the Implementing Unit (PPMIU) of Tarlac conducted a site inspection on 10 September to validate the progress.

Quiros said the subproject will be operational this year, with minor repairs needed and cleanup to ensure an excellent level of workmanship.

The turnover of the subproject to the Mayantoc Sweet Potato Clean Planting Materials Producers Cooperative will be held in October.

Some 1,000 pieces of sweet potato worth P30,000 will be planted in the newly-established nursery.

Cabubus said a trading capital was secured for the purchase of cuttings from farmer-growers amounting to P588,000 to guarantee income.

One delivery truck, tractor and some 30 pieces modified net house amounting to P2.8 million were also purchased.

The DA-PRDP is determined to enforce and strengthen agriculture-based enterprises to augment productivity through alternative livelihoods and support facilities.
