The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) yesterday announced it is set to release the guidelines set for the training of collegiate athletes by next week.

CHED chair Prospero de Vera III said they have already conducted a public consultation and will discuss the rules when the Commission en banc convenes on Tuesday, 20 October.

“Within the week I should be able to issue the guidelines for training ng collegiate athletes,” De Vera told the Daily Tribune.

The Inter-Agency Task Force on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID) recently approved the resolution allowing the resumption of training of student-athletes in the collegiate level patterned after the joint administrative order (JAO) for the professional leagues.

De Vera said the IATF-MEID has tasked CHEd to issue the guidelines.

“So, when the IATF approved this, I created the technical working group. I included the Philippine Sports Commission, Games and Amusement Board, and representatives from the UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) and NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) to formulate the guidelines,” explained De Vera.

“And then I promised within three weeks the guidelines would be finished. We were able to put them together within three weeks except that all issuances of the CHEd is subject to mandatory public consultation. There are almost 2,000 universities, so, if you don’t hold a public consultation, many would surely react,” he added.

The public consultation took a little longer than he expected as there were a lot of issues raised by the participating schools, shared the CHED chief.

“If it is passed by the Commission en banc on Tuesday, I will issue it within the week. Many of the issues raised by the universities were not so much about the guidelines only. Many of them were asking when we are going to allow the tournaments to happen,” he added.
