Year-round greens from Navotas vertical farm
Navotas is one of the smallest cities in terms of land area. This is why vertical farming is most apt for us as it maximizes our limited space
In a bid to help Navoteños achieve a sufficient and more sustainable food source, Navotas City recently launched its first urban vertical farm.
In partnership with Good Greens and Co. and the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP), Navotas City has ventured into aeroponic farming to bring fresh and high-quality produce directly to city residents.
“This pandemic made us see the need for a sufficient and sustainable source of food. We hope this urban vertical farm will help us provide inexpensive healthy and organic produce to our constituents,” Navotas City Congressman John Rey Tiangco said.
“Navotas is one of the smallest cities in terms of land area. This is why vertical farming is most apt for us as it maximizes our limited space,” he added.
The vertical farm, located at NavotaAs Homes 1-Tanza, can be considered as the tallest in Metro Manila.
The farm features four tower greenhouses, the construction of which was financed by BSP, the Navotas City Council and Good Greens.
Navotas City provided the 300- square- meter area for the project.
“We have also secured the Department of Agriculture’s commitment to contribute for the construction of eight more towers,” Tiangco noted.
For its part, Good Greens will manage the farm to yield high-value and year-round crops. They will also provide learning opportunities for scouts to plant, use their technology, and harvest vegetables.
This form of farm technology enables growers to save 75 percent to 90 percent space.
The vertical farm utilizes state- of- the- art technology to increase vegetable yield by a factor of 100, two times more than in other farms.
With year- round growth, organizers hope to harvest as much as eight tons of vegetables each year.
In the Philippines, aeroponic vertical farms have already been tested in Taguig City, while others have already been set up in San Fernando, Pampanga, Bacolod City and Parañaque City.
