Lucio San Pedro tribute concert opens online series

Maestro San Pedro’s granddaugh­ter Mary Grace Solleil Intalan San Pedro will sing his popular compositio­ns

After a successful debut in 2020, the Sunshine Classics online series returns with a new line-up of classical concerts.

Uploaded on the Sunshine Place: Senior Recreation Center’s YouTube channel, the shows may be viewed with a ticket purchase. Viewing of each concerto is available for one month. With one click, viewers can access the concert video as many times as they want.

In the lineup is a tribute to National Artist for Music Lucio D. San Pedro by the Angono National Symphonic Band with conductors Jonald John C. Paredes and Giuseppe Andre “Jopi” V. Diestro on 15 February to 15 March; and Singing in Sunshine with soprano Stefanie Quintin-Avila, tenor Ivan Nery and pianist Mariel Ilusorio on 15 March to 15 April.

In celebratio­n of Maestro San Pedro’s 108th birthday on 11 February, the Angono National Symphonic Band plays his timeless compositio­ns and arrangemen­ts. These include “Jubilate Heroic March,” “Pamulinawe­n,” “Suite Pastorale,” “1956: Horizon ‘Abot Tanaw,’” “Sunset in the Village ‘Dapit Hapon,’” “Rustic Dance ‘Pista Sa Nayon,’” “Millennium March,” “Maharlika March,” “Pandanggo sa Ilaw,” “Kaming

Magmamani,” “Martsa Galante,” “Lahing Kayumanggi” and “Silayan.”

Paredes and Diestro, renowned musicians in their own right, will be conducting the concert, which will be hosted by pianist Mariel Ilusorio.

The Angono National Symphonic Band was formed by the National Artist’s father, Elpidio San Pedro, as a laboratory band for conducting and compositio­n. Through Maestro San Pedro’s unrivaled dedication and artistic discipline that he passed down to the group, the Angono National Symphonic Band was developed into a world-class performing symphonic band that holds two National Band Champion titles earned both in 1960 and 1979. The group has also performed in concerts here and abroad.

Sta. Isabel College Conservato­ry of Music.

Sunny days ahead

This will be followed by Singing in Sunshine on 15 March to 15 April 2021, a voice and piano concerto featuring soprano Stefanie Quintin-Avila and tenor Ivan Nery.

Avila, who is known for a “voice with remarkable flexibilit­y and a truly commanding musical presence,” attended the Vielklang Akademie für Alte Musik in Tübingen, Germany, and studied with early music specialist­s — lutenist Lee Santana and soprano Sybilla Rubens. She has performed as a soloist in various internatio­nal festivals such as the Asia-Europe New Music Festival (Vietnam); Yilan Internatio­nal Arts Festival (Taiwan); soundSCAPE Festival (Italy); Baroque Festival (Singapore) and many others. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Contempora­ry Music Studies at the University of California San Diego.

Paredes and Diestro, renowned musicians in their own right, will be conducting the concert.

Joining her is tenor Ivan Nery, who is known for his smooth and clear voice and unsullied musicality. He won first prize in the Jovita Fuentes Vocal Competitio­n and was an Aliw award nominee for best actor in a musical for Noli Me Tangere the opera and also a nominee for best classical performer. Category A, National Music Competitio­ns for Young Artists (NAMCYA), will accompany them.

Other upcoming performanc­es in the Sunshine Classic online series include the Manila Symphony Junior String Quartet on 15 July to 15 August; Nostalgia with Inna Montesclar­os on 15 September to 15 October; and the Manila Piano Trio on 15 November to 15 December 2021.
