Corpuz powers USC to victory

Corpuz drew solid support from her teammates as USC stamped its class in the team event

Allisen Corpuz fired a third straight 71 on Wednesday to lead University of Southern California (USC) to a four-shot victory in the Sun Winter Classic at the Talking Stick North Course in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The 22-year-old

USC senior, whose father is a Filipino, made three birdies against two bogeys to settle for third place in the individual category on three-under 213, six shots behind winner Lin n Grant of Arizona State.

Corpuz drew solid support from her teammates as USC stamped its class in the team event with a closing 283 for 858 overall.

Also scoring for USC were Brianna Navarrosa and Amelia Garvey who each shot 70 and Alyaa Abdulghany who matched par.

Navarrosa, the 18-year-old daughter of former Filipino tennis champion Ringo, had three birdies against a single bogey to tie for 11th on 3-over 219.

Garvey, on the other hand, birdied the 18th hole to get into a tie for fourth place with Abdulghany on 2-under 214.

Arizona State took second spot on 2-under 862 while Arizona settled for third on 20-over 884.

Individual champion Grant collected six birdies against one bogey to close with 67 and 210, three shots ahead of Emma Spitz of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Allisen Corpuz fired a third straight 71 on Wednesday to lead University of Southern California.

Spitz shot a 70 in the final round. Tied for sixth were Amanda Linner of Arizona State (72-215) and YuSang Hou of Arizona (73-215).

Completing the Top 10 were Alexa Melton of USC (76-217) and Kirsty Hodkins of Colorado (73-218). Rounding out the team standings: Oregon 886, UCLA 887, Colorado 895, Washington 898, Oregon State 907, California 910 and Washington State 910.
