Scholarship for women in STEM
According to data from the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), less than 30 percent of the world’s researchers are women. Only 30 percent of female students select STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) fields in higher education.
The enrollment of female students in areas related to STEM is particularly low globally, specifically for information and communications technology, natural sciences, mathematics and statistics, engineering, manufacturing and construction.
To help address this matter, the British Council launched a scholarship program that encourages over 100 women from 20 countries across the Americas, South Asia and East Asia to pursue postgraduate degrees in STEM in the United Kingdom. Eligible countries in Southeast Asia are Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
The scholarship will cover tuition fees, monthly stipend, travel costs, visa and health coverage fees. A provision for scholars who need a short pre-sessional English course to achieve the language level needed for their studies will also be provided. British Council in the Philippines country director Pilar Aramayo-Prudencio said through a statement: “We want to contribute to closing the gender gap in STEM and help advance the broader effort towards gender equality. Our Women and girls in STEM programs around the world are designed with a lifecycle approach in mind — from inspiring young girls to stay in STEM to supporting women working in STEM fields to reach positions of leadership and to network with their peers in their region and in the UK.”
Candidates must apply directly to the following universities: University of Glasgow, Liverpool John Moores University or University of Stirling. Applications are open until mid-March 2021.
