NEW YORK (AFP) — A deadly winter weather system that brought record-busting cold to the southern and central United States, knocking out power for millions in oil-rich Texas, blanketed the East Coast in snow Thursday, disrupting coronavirus vaccinations.

The historic frigid blast has over the past week seen Arctic cold envelope much of the US sun belt unfamiliar with such extremes, leaving dozens of dead in its wake and several million Texans told to boil water before consuming it.

Thursday, a major winter storm impacted an area stretching from Virginia up to the Northeast, bringing icy buildups and treacherous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow fell steadily across New York City throughout the day, forcing the cancelation of about 200 flights and delaying the opening of two Covid-19 vaccination sites after the storm disrupted dosage delivery.

By 4:50 p.m. (2150 GMT), meteorologists had recorded more than four inches (10 centimeters) of snow in lower Manhattan.

The Big Apple has already been blanketed by the white stuff twice this winter during two separate storms.

“The occasional snowstorm is always good but as we’re getting closer to March it gets a little tiring. I’m ready for it to start being warm again,” 18-year-old student Kara Dickson said.

A weather warning was in effect in New Jersey, where Governor Phil Murphy announced the temporary closure of several vaccination sites.

Across Texas, which has been hardest hit by the cold snap, utility companies were gradually restoring power although more than 250,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity late Thursday, according to PowerOutage.us.

Even as the lights came back on, some Texas residents were dealing with the misery of water pipes that had burst in the frigid temperatures.

Following his discharge from mandatory military service in South Korea, Exo member Doh Kyungsoo (D.O.) landed two major movie roles for 2021. On 15 February, the 28-year-old K-Pop idol was reported to have taken the lead role in the remake of the Taiwanese film Secret (2008) by production company Hive Media Corp.

Secret is about piano prodigy Ye Xianglun (originally played by Jay Chou) who transfers to a music school where his father teaches. He meets piano student Xiaoyu whom he learns is the one playing the mysterious melody he heard while touring the empty piano building.

They develop feelings after spending time with each other. One day, circumstances lead Xianglun to discover that Xiaoyu is from the past and was only able to travel to the future by playing the mysterious melody on the piano.

Secret earned six nominations at the 44th Golden Horse Awards and won Outstanding Taiwanese Film of the Year, Best Original Song for the track “Secret” and Best Visual Effects.

The film was also nominated for Best Asian Film at the 27th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2008.

In 2016, Secret was adapted into a theater musical in the United States and China.

Kyungsoo has also been cast as lead actor in director Kim Yong-hwa’s film with the working title, The Moon.

On the video streaming service V Live, Kyungsoo said he is also working on a solo album: “As for album preparations, I’m working hard on it. The songs are done. I am working on the lyrics. Once the lyrics are done, then recordings, then I can finally show it to you guys.”

Kyungsoo’s 2019 single, “That’s Okay,” surpassed 25 million streams on Spotify.
