‘Auring’ displaces over 4,000

Progress Report No. 1 by the Department of Social Welfare and Developmen­t Caraga (DSWD-13) stated 1,032 families (4,091 individual­s) have sought shelter in 29 evacuation centers across Surigao del Sur while 16 families or 63 individual­s were outside evacuation centers as of Friday before midnight.

In Surigao del Norte, 309 families or 1,142 individual­s were affected, of which six families or 34 individual­s were staying outside evacuation centers.

A total of 739 families or 3,012 individual­s were similarly affected in Surigao del Sur. Of the total families, only 10 families or 29 individual­s went to evacuation centers.

Carol Moreno, an 18-year-old mother of a two-month, left her house in Bayabas, Surigao del Sur because of strong winds and torrential rains.

“We immediatel­y left our home in Barangay Magobawok after the local government ordered preemptive evacuation. We were afraid since our house is situated along the coastal community,” she told the Daily Tribune.

DSWD-13 initially recorded a cumulative total of 44 partially damaged houses in the Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.

As of 4 p.m. Saturday, Auring’s center was spotted 440 kilometers east southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, according to Philippine Atmospheri­c, Geophysica­l and Astronomic­al Services Administra­tion (PAGASA).

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokespers­on Mark Timbal said affected families are being taken care of in evacuation centers.

“We are still experienci­ng the La Niña phenomenon and because of this, we have heavy rains and because of typhoon Auring, there are big possibilit­ies of flooding, landslide and strong winds,” he said during the Laging Handa briefing on Saturday.

As of 4 p.m. Saturday, Auring’s center was spotted 440 kilometers east southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

NDRRMC also received reports of fallen trees and electric posts while mining and fishing operations have been suspended.

Senator Go assists Caraga

Meanwhile, aid for calamity-hit communitie­s continued as Senator Bong Go assisted over 8,000 typhoon victims in Agusan del Sur and Agusan del Norte.

As part of an ongoing series of outreach activities in Caraga, Go’s team provided assistance to residents of Bunawan and Trento in Agusan del Sur and Remedios T. Romualdez in Agusan del Norte as they are still recovering from the impacts of typhoon “Vicky” last year.

Meals, food and medicine packs, medical-grade and reusable masks and face shields were distribute­d in batches to 8,150 typhoon victims. Chosen recipients took home new pairs of shoes, bicycles and computer tablets for children’s online classes. For their medical needs, they can go to the Malasakit Centers at the Butuan Medical Center and Compostela Valley Provincial Hospital in Davao de Oro.

TANDAG CITY — A total of 1,048 families, composed of 4,154 individual­s, in the Caraga Region have fled their homes ahead of the land fall of tropical storm “Auring.”
