Kirkness kisses UP goodbye

- BEA MICALLER

Teen sensation Ethan Kirkness kissed University of the Philippines (UP) goodbye without playing a single minute in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.

His father, Michael, confirmed to Daily Tribune that they will no longer honor their commitment as their negotiations with the Fighting Maroons had been frozen for the past six months.

The elder Kirkness said his son is still in Australia and is looking to focus on his studies.

“He is not with UP anymore and he is here in Australia for the past 10 months,” Michael said in a message.

“I don’t think he will come back and play for UP in the future.”

Kirkness is projected to become the next big thing for the Fighting Maroons.

In fact, the 6-foot-10 slotman was part of the star-studded recruiting class that also has CJ Cansino, Carl Tamayo, Gerry Abadiano, Malick Diouf and Joel Cagulangan.

Aside from UP, Kirkness was also tapped for Gilas Pilipinas Youth team, but has yet to see action due to a recurring knee injury. However, he continues his skills and development training with the Xpress Basketball in Queensland, Australia.

He is not with UP anymore and he is here in Australia for the past 10 months.

UP coach Bo Perasol confirmed Kirkness’ decision, saying that the long lull brought by the pandemic made him realized that it would be better if he would pursue his studies in Australia.

“I believe Ethan and his family had decided to forego his playing opportunity here in the Philippines based on what is best for him,” Perasol said.

“This pandemic has brought a lot of realizations not only for Ethan but for most of us. We wish Ethan the best in his future endeavor.”
