Remake 2.0 of FFVII out on PS5

- BY JOHN PAUL FRANCISCO

New lighting, texture and particle systems were announced for the title that has an optional 60 frames per second mode.

A 2021 “remake” of the 2020 Final Fantasy VII Remake added lightning and thunder to the Sony State of Play series video reveal event for the PlayStation 5 and the still desirable PS4.

More a graphics update, the FFVII Remake Intergrade will be exclusive to the PS5 consoles to be released in June although PS4 owners can get the features as a free upgrade.

The caveat for PS4 owners to get the free upgrades is that they must own the game digitally.

New lighting, texture and particle systems were announced for the title that has an optional 60 frames per second mode. A new “classic” option is also available for the game’s active battling system.

Classic mode allows players to select commands from menus in lieu of using the joystick to directly control characters like Cloud or Tifa.

There’s also a new episode of content that will allow players to control the original character Yuffie not available in the 2020 remake.

Yuffie was shown in teaser footage with a companion named Sonon, with the latter being used by the former to do sweeping and cinematic attacks.

“To access this new chapter, existing owners will have to pay for the extra DLC, though publisher Square Enix hasn’t yet clarified how much that will cost,” Ars Technica (AT) reported.

Also getting its fair share of attention during the Sony reveal was Returnal, a project of Sony collaborator Housemarque, launching on 30 April.

The third-person shooter, according to AT, “largely resembles Risk of Rain 2, in terms of pitting players against fantastical, supernatural beasts while letting players access a mix of wild attacks and high-speed dodges.”

Meanwhile, Solar Ash, will arrive late this year from the maker of the beloved indie action game Hyper Light Drifter.

“The results look like a cross between Jet Set Radio and Shadow of the Colossus, in terms of high-speed third-person platforming combined with epic ‘crawl over bosses’ encounters,” AT said.
