Fighting boredom

There is comfort in the routine I engage in. But at the same time, every two weeks or so, I need to do something different or, at the very least, take a break from my routine

- AIMEE MARCOS

I am trying very hard to find a way to write about something that has nothing to do with the pandemic. I realize this is nearly impossible, bordering on the futile.

Frankly, I’m really tired of talking, writing or thinking about Covid-19 and the worldwide crisis it has caused. Pandemic fatigue has fully set in, me thinks. I believe this virus will end up becoming like the common cold with the way most of the anti-vaxxers are going and how the general population is reacting.

In an effort to try and find something else to write about, I will dwell this week about ennui and routine. See, there is comfort in the routine I engage in. But at the same time, every two weeks or so (I believe I’m in this funk now) I need to do something different or, at the very least, take a break from my routine.

It’s pretty straightforward: I get up, do morning rituals, grab my coffee and have breakfast, pat the dogs, water the plants, check on the other people in the house, and then sit down and start working.

I’ve been working from home for a few years now, so this is second nature to me. Once I sit down at my work space, my mind flips on as soon as I go over my emails.

Every hour or so, I take breaks and get up and walk even just around the office.

I work until around dinner time and take another break. After dinner, I try to get other things done (meal plans, grocery lists, my kid’s exam schedule, bedtime reading, etc.) and then head off to bed.

If I’m not too tired, I read. But I usually just scroll down my phone and play a game or two before drifting off to sleep.

Something different

But yeah, the boredom of it all is setting in. Not that I don’t like this life, but I really do appreciate it. I made it for myself and I take full ownership of it.

But there are times when we need a break from the routine. Nothing really extravagant like going to the beach or something, just something different.

So, this weekend, I’m planning to do something that is REALLY out of my comfort zone — like watch K-Drama.

I don’t really like dramas, and I don’t look for it. I like sci-fi, coming of age stories, comedies and historical movies.

I did attempt to watch Crash Landing On You (CLOY) when that series and Dalgona coffee were all the rage. But man, I could not get past the second or third episode, as much as I tried.

Recently though, friends have convinced me otherwise. I have become, surprisingly, a pretty involved BTS ARMY Tita (I seriously surprised myself over how much I love these guys).

My friends have convinced me that not all Korean shows are as cloying as CLOY, so gave it a try. I’ll post my reactions here next week, if I can get through it.

Another thing I’m going to attempt to do this weekend is to plant smaller plants. The fruit and vegetable plants I have been nurturing these last few months have gone for naught, as the rain kept them from fully growing.

I’ve made the heartbreaking decision to start over again but on a smaller scale. The tomatoes have had a good run, I must say, giving us a few yields that were consumed. But it is time to let go.

I am trying to keep things to container levels and not make them too big. And I am planning a little makeshift greenhouse next time, because when the rains come, the effects are pretty brutal.

I will also be more attentive of the schedule of growing per season.

Oh, my goodness. How boring do I sound?! Truth be told, any advice anyone has out there for planting and growing things, or even what K-drama I should be checking out, feel free to have a conversation with me through my Instagram, @aimeer.marcos.

I’d love to hear from you!
