WHAT MAKES A BAD JOKE?

It’s not surprising to see netizens react that way because proposals generally are taken seriously, most especially by women. Most have dreamed and anticipated it since they’ve begun dating and having relationships

It’s something that was supposed to be funny or amusing but got the opposite reaction instead: embarrassment, insult or disappointment. Netizens saw Jake Cuenca’s “dinner date proposalprank”asacaseofareally“badjoke.” The actor had uploaded a video of a dinner date replete with the requisite arrangements of an alfresco dinner set-up where the table was surrounded by candles that form a heart.

Jake was heard asking, “So I prepared this because I just wanted to ask you one thing.” His girlfriend of two years, Miss International 2016 Kylie Versoza, looked surprisedly expectant. Jake continued, “So, here it goes… kumain... kumain ka na ba (Have you eaten already)?”

After a few awkward moments when Kylie was seen like on the verge of crying and letting out a laugh, Jake asked if she loved it and she replied, “Super! Except you. Wow!” To which Jake replied that he loves her.

Most netizens did not find his prank proposal funny. One even directly called it a “bad joke” and asked him not to do a prank like that again. The actor replied, “Yes but we are not like most. We get each other and we get the timing of things. When the time is right and the timing is our (sic) I will not hesitate to ask.”

The two met on the set of the steamy afternoon romance drama Los Bastardos in 2018. As the actor said, he and Kylie are not most couples and implied that they know each other well that they would know how to act or deal with each other.

It’s not surprising to see netizens react that way because proposals generally are taken seriously, most especially by women. Most have dreamed and anticipated it since they’ve begun dating and having relationships.

Perhaps it became ordinary over time due to commercialization of what should have been supposedly an intimate, personal and private affair between a couple. Thus, expectations are high; people claim their stake on such a private matter especially if those involved are public figures. Well, here’s to hoping that both Jake and Kylie will eventually have their happy ending so the sappy romantics will have something to gush about. It’s a win-win situation.

Confirmed

Netizens are quite savage on the comments sections of articles related to the confirmation of “relationship” between Ellen Adarna and Derek Ramsey. There were tons of moralists calling them names as if the actors owe them explanation for seeing each other. Fact is, before their hook up, the two have separated from their respective celebrity partners and both are, therefore, unattached. There were also those who posted comments not related to the story such as factoids, fast facts and trivia on history, natural sciences and allied topics. Quite a lot posted jokes and humor on sundry topics, most especially on hygiene. It’s as if they were negating or saying that celebrity break-up stories should have not been written or printed and are a waste of time and space. Interestingly, they have time to post those that are actually quite relevant and informative for the lurkers, commenters and trolls that hound the comment sections. For example, some posted verbatim the preamble of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the patriotic oath “Panatang Makabayan” and the Miranda right.

At least, while people lurk or scroll through these comments sections, they learn or relearn what they should take to heart.
