The City of Lapu-Lapu, where resorts, Mactan Economic Zone and the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) are located, is now being considered by OCTA Research Group as one of the areas of major concern on the increasing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases.

“While Cebu City still had the most numbers of Covid-19 cases, averaging 226 per day for the past seven days, its trend has slowed down, as reproduction number in Cebu City decreased to 1.42. Lapu-Lapu continued to have an increase in new Covid-19 cases while its hospital occupancy is at 77 percent,” Octa said in its Covid-19 Report dated 27 February 2021.

Based on OCTA’s monitoring report, it said that Lapu-Lapu City had an average of 58 new cases per day from 20 to 27 February, and has positivity rate of 14 percent and a daily attack rate per 100,000 population of 10.62 percent.

With this, OCTA research professor Dr. Guido David told the Daily Tribune that, “Yes, bed occupancy is limited in Lapu-Lapu City. Maybe they can move some patients to other hospitals, the trend is slowing down in Cebu City and Mandaue, so they need to maintain their efforts to slowing down the spread of the virus.”

This city has two private hospitals, and a public hospital that can accommodate Covid patients.

Guido likewise cited the increase in cases in the National Capital Region as serious as “this is similar to the rate of increase observed in Cebu City, Mountain Province and Benguet, where specimens of the SARS-CoV2 variant (e.g. UK B.1.1.7 variant with spike gene mutation) were identified.”

In the OCTA Monitoring report, Cebu City averages 226 daily new cases, Mandaue with 45 and Talisay City with 22 — from 20 to 26 February 2021.

Daily attack rates per 100,000 population in Cebu City has 21.31, Mandaue City has 10.37 and Talisay City with 7.4.

The positivity rates in Mandaue and Talisay were 18 percent and 16 percent, respectively.

Cebu City’s hospital occupancy rate reduced to 47 percent, while Mandaue has 60 percent and Talisay with 66 percent.

As of 27 February, Cebu City has 2,992 active cases, Cebu Province with 1,417, Mandaue City has 804 cases and Lapu-Lapu City with 856 cases.
