Duterte’s Kitchen serves Manila fire victims hot meals

Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi yesterday urged employees and stakeholders to exercise caution and be more vigilant in fire incidents among households.

Cusi said faulty wiring and the improper use of appliances and electronic products should be checked.

The Bureau of Fire Protection has launched its month-long activities to increase public awareness to ensure households and other establishments are safe from fires.

The Department of Energy is also conducting an information campaign drive to promote fire safety.

The agency cautions the public from leaving appliances plugged in for long periods especially during the summer season.

Electrical cords and sockets should also be covered and guarded against children who may be fatally injured from their incorrect use.

Last week, Duterte’s Kitchen, an outreach program started by Secretary Cusi, provided 2,000 hot meals to residents of Parola Compound in Tondo, Manila who were left homeless following a fire that razed 500 homes last Sunday, 21 February.

Residents from Barangay 20, Zone 2, District 1 in Port Area, Manila had a breakfast of arroz caldo provided by Duterte’s Kitchen volunteers, headed by Carol Matsuda, in cooperation with Barangay Kagawad Freddie Amistoso and community leaders Ronante Cuales and Bernadeth Sabalza,

The fire razed 300 houses in Area F, Gate 20 in Parola Compound, leaving 600 families homeless. They are currently housed at the P. Guevarra Elementary School and Jose Abad Santos High School, where modular tents were set up for them.

Duterte’s Kitchen’s Malasakit Program reaches out to poor communities and frontliners to serve them with hot meals.

“We would like to thank Duterte’s Kitchen, especially Energy Secretary Al Cusi who has a heart for the poor. Thank you that you have not forgotten us at a time like this,” Amistoso said.

Organized by Cusi in 2016, a public servant and businessman with a heart for less fortunate Filipinos, Duterte’s Kitchen continues to reach out to indigent communities, especially during this pandemic.

“Duterte’s Kitchen is ready to give service to our poorest citizens, especially in this time of the pandemic. Let us help each other to put an end to the sufferings of our fellow citizens,” Cusi said.

In a coordination meeting last month to fight Covid-19 in Rizal province, Cusi led the distribution of 1,000 antigen test kits and 37,000 face shields for the frontliners of Rizal, while Duterte’s Kitchen volunteers distributed 10,000 cupcakes to indigent children and residents in the area.
