Mandaue 2021 tax collection declines

- BY RICO M. OSMEÑA @tribunephl_rico

The Mandaue City Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO) recently reported a decrease on its tax collection by 20 to 30 percent during the first quarter of 2021.

In a statement, BPLO chief Atty. August Lizer Malate said that they already expected the drop in collection due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, saying that the lower collections were due to businesses that retired or shut down due to the pandemic or other businesses which did not renew the permits such as those selling liquors.

Malate, however, expressed optimism that tax collections would increase as his office started to conduct inspections and enforcement of business regulations this month with the City Treasurer’s Office.

During the first quarter of 2020, the city has collected more than P1 billion in taxes and business permits and the BPLO has issued more than 12,300 business permits including new businesses, renewal and services.

Based on the city government’s data, 528 new businesses were already registered as of April 2021 compared to last year’s 589, while those who renewed licenses this month reached to 9,737, which is higher than last year’s 9,710.

Malate said there were no big changes on the numbers of new businesses and renewal since last year.
