Dulaang Sipat Lawin mounts the Children's Hour in Filipino

-

The Dulaang Sipat Lawin, resident theater group of the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA) will showcase Joel Saracho’s Kwentong Bata, a translation of Lillian Hellman’s The Children’s Hour.

The play by the Jewish-American playwright, Lillian Hellman, was based on a 19th century trial in Edinburgh where two women ran and managed a private school for girls who were accused of “inordinate affection” for one another. The trial sparked countless debates on gender performativity, othering, and the believability of truths and falsities. It is also critical to the reactions of ordinary people to confusing events, adherence to an oppressing system of breeding, and the painful difficulties of lasting changes.

The Children’s Hour is a study of parallelisms of timeless societal issues, a piece worthy of scrutiny by today’s young artists in the age of growing falsity and harsh systems locally and around the world.

The Junior High Theater Arts scholars, featuring the Grade 10 students will showcase this play on the virtual stage on 13 to 16 May 2021 at 7 p.m. on the school’s official Facebook page. Admission is free.
