American rapper Common transforms into a suave, debonair dermatologist in the second season of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever.

Never Have I Ever is a coming-of-age series about Indian-American teenager Devi (played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and how she deals with day-to-day struggles, pressures in high school and at home.

Common, real name Lonnie Rashid Lynn, plays Dr. Chris Jackson who also works in the same building as Nalini’s (Poorna Jagannathan). His high-end practice and celebrity clients are impressive to everyone — except Nalini.

He will be a recurring guest star in the series, Netflix announced. On the first-look images, Common sports a sleek, stylish blue suit, face-to-face with Jagannathan’s character.

Common will join Ramakrishnan, Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Jaren Lewison, Darren Barnet, Lee Rodriguez, and Ramona Young. Another new face in the new season is Megan Suri, who will play a new student named Aneesa.

According to Deadline, Common was the first one to reach out to the show’s producers. The role was said to be written specifically for him.

“Oscar winner Common is into our show,” series creator Mindy Kaling said at the recent SAG Awards. She added jokingly, “I wonder if he likes the producers of our show.”

Never Have I Ever is created by executive producer Mindy Kaling, with Lang Fisher as co-executive producer, showrunner, and writer. It will air in July. LOUISE LIZAN, @tribunephl_lou
