Oscar winners on board for David Beckham docuseries
Fisher Stevens — who won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for ‘The Cove’ — will direct the Beckham docuseries. He is also producing it with John Battsek (‘One Day in September,’ ‘Searching for Sugar Man’)
Oscar winners Fisher Stevens and John Battsek are on board for Netflix’s David Beckham documentary series.
In 2020, media reported the soccer superstar and his wife Victoria would be the subject of a $20 million Netflix documentary.
The project is currently in production at Beckham’s production lot, Studio 99, in association with Battsek’s Ventureland.
Now it’s been confirmed that Stevens — who won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for The Cove — will direct the Beckham docuseries. He is also producing it with John Battsek (One Day in September, Searching for Sugar Man).
The docuseries will explore Beckham’s “humble working-class beginnings in East London, and the drive and determination that led him to become one of the most recognizable and scrutinized athletes of all time,” according to a publicity material.
Along with interviews with Beckham’s family, friends, and key figures in his life, it will also feature “never-before-seen personal archive material from the last 40 years.”
The project is currently in production at Beckham’s production lot, Studio 99, in association with Battsek’s Ventureland.
Also in the creative team for the project are editors Chris King
(Senna, Amy) and Bjorn Johnson
(Don’t F**k with Cats, Bad Sport), as well as cinematographer Tim Cragg (Three Identical Strangers, Billie).
