The President’s work is never done. Although observers noted that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had relatively been quiet the weeks since he assumed office, it didn’t mean that he was not up to his elbows in work. Unlike some of his predecessors who kept themselves visible to make a good impression, he was seldom seen, with his personal appearances few and far between. The only updates Filipinos had with him were through the regular briefings by his spokesperson, Trixie Cruz-Angeles.

However, that is farthest from the truth. Upon his assumption of the Agriculture portfolio, Marcos Jr. has been conferring with experts to improve food security in anticipation of hard times as a result of the Ukraine-Russia conflict. With the end view of making rice and other staples affordable for more Filipinos, focus has been on assisting farmers from farm to market and identifying varieties that will produce the biggest yield.

There was also focus on managing traffic in the National Capital Region, with commuters being provided with free transportation options until the end of the year to mitigate fare increases arising from the fluctuating prices of gasoline, providing laborers with some form of assistance to dampen the high prices.

Observers pointed out that the Marcos administration is inheriting the good and the bad from the Duterte government. With a crack economic team, programs that helped push the economy in the past six years, notably “Build, Build, Build,” are being continued. Issues such as the coronavirus pandemic and insurgency will still have to be found solutions by the end of term in 2028.

With his State of the Nation Address today, President Marcos Jr. discusses the concrete ways to realize his vision for the Filipino people in the coming six years. These programs will serve to guide us in becoming partners of government.
