BOOSTER DOSE #2

- HALF FULL LIAANDANAR YU

Australia — Friends of mine who were ill with Covid seven months ago were recently sick again due to Sars-CoV-2. One of them went back to work this week, while the other continues to isolate. Both of them describe their symptoms as mild and much easier to manage than their first Covid-positive result back in late December 2021. They remember being in isolation on New Year’s Day. They both have had two doses of a Covid vaccine

and a booster.

The period of possible Covid-19 reinfection has recently been reduced from the previous 12 weeks down to the current four weeks. It’s concerning that after being Covid-positive, one can expect to have some level of immunity from it for only roughly 28 days — not a very long time at all!

It has been seven months since my first booster dose and already over five months since my first, and hopefully last, Covid infection in February.

I am so relieved to have gotten my second booster, also referred to as the winter dose here, last Thursday. We are in the midst of a bitterly cold winter and on top of SarsVICTORIA,

CoV-2, other seasonal illnesses such as influenza and RSV or Respiratory Syncytial Virus, a disease I’ve just heard about, are making community health matters even more challenging.

News from across the globe about another Covid wave in particular areas and reinfection in certain pockets of the community are not uncommon.

There are many things that continue to be out of our control since a pandemic was declared.

Thankfully, we already know the things that are within our control, personal and individual ways to keep safe, such as wearing a mask, maintaining good hand hygiene, getting vaccinated, staying home when feeling unwell and other such health protocols.

Three years on and these minimum public health standards continue to be effective ways to protect oneself from infection. If someone told me back in 2020 that I’d still have to practice these Covid Safe protocols in 2023, I would have thought the prediction quite exaggerated and highly unlikely. But here I am now, mask covering my nose and mouth, hand sanitizing alcohol in my bag and, finally, inoculated with my second booster shot!

Immensely thankful to have another layer of protection for myself and all those around me, so I can keep working and playing in the safest way I know how.
