Who would have thought that a newspaper whose critics said would not last six months will continue to exist even after 22 years?

Amid protests against former President Joseph Estrada, Daily Tribune was born in the year 2000 with only 16 pages and from there immediately built its reputation as a hard-hitting paper.

The late journalist Niñez Cacho-Olivares founded the Daily Tribune to provide the public with no-nonsense opinion pieces and trenchant stories about the political situation in the country.

Today, the Daily Tribune has emerged as one of the most resilient broadsheets in the country manned by people who have been living up to the paper’s “Without fear, Without favor” mantra.

Concept and Information Group’s acquisition of the paper from Niñez in 2018 paved the way for the revitalization and quick expansion of the Tribune.

Headed by the indefatigable couple Willie and Chingbee Fernandez, the paper has carved for itself a reputation as the people’s tribune or champion, one not averse to embracing technological advancements in news dissemination.

With its hard-nosed but fair journalism and a strong online presence, the Daily Tribune has cultivated a strong following.

Over the years, it has reaped notable distinctions including the Most Innovative Broadsheet for 2018 during the 44th Philippine Business Exposition. Its office in Makati City is festooned with so many journalism awards that there’s scant space for more.

That’s a joke, of course. There will always be space for more honors that are, no doubt, just on the horizon.
