The government’s Solid Waste Granulator and Brick-Making Facility has been producing paving, construction and barrier materials since it started operation last year, the Metropolitan Manila Development authority said Tuesday.

From april 2021 to September 2022, the facility at the MMDa Vitas, Tondo Pumping Station in Manila has churned out 35,461 pieces of eco-bricks, 2,999 pieces of hollow blocks, and 91 pieces of concrete barriers.

The eco-bricks are being used as pavers for walkways, the hollow blocks are in use in MMDa projects, and the barriers are positioned on streets managed by the implementing agency of the Metro Manila Council.

“The facility is part of the MMDa’s initiative in support of the Metro Manila Flood Management Project with the goal of reducing flooding in Metro Manila by reducing solid waste in waterways,” the authority said.

The MMDa installed its first ever granulator and brick-making facility in one of its flood control facilities where solid wastes end up.

The MMDa said the facility, based on a Philippine patent approved by the Department of Science and Technology, will not only help reduce solid wastes but will also extend the service life of landfills.

asid from the bricks, hollow blocks, and barriers, the facility also produce bio-waste compost materials, the MMDa said.
